The Gauteng Department of Housing hosted the Bekkersdal Local Economic Development (LED) Indaba on 5th and 6th June 2008. The aim of the Indaba was to engage business, government, community and academic stakeholders on how best to promote sustainable communities through local economic development, vocational training, job creation and poverty alleviation initiatives. Dolomitic Danger in Westonaria

About 15 000 families in Bekkersdal live on high-risk and dangerous dolomitic land. Buildings constructed on dolomitic land are in real danger of being suddenly plunged into sinkholes as the large dolomite rocks move and create or open up underground caverns. The Bekkersdal Renewal Project (BRP) was initiated to address the plight of Bekkersdal residents located on dolomitic land through a relocation plan. [ Read more ]
