The Bekkersdal Renewal Project’s sports teams triumphed at the BRP awards show held at Bekkersdal Development Hub (BDH) on 5 November 2008. The Award Ceremony was a culmination of the three-day sports festival aimed at increasing the awareness of violence against women and children, as part of the National 16 Days of Activism Campaign.
The BRP teams collected gold medals and sports kit in senior netball and soccer categories. The BRP Masters soccer team beat the Bekkersdal Masters soccer team in the final with a penalty shoot-out, scooping the floating trophy. The sun set on the New Horizon netball team as the BRP netball team beat them15 –12, to win the tournament.

In other results, Young Ones City FC hammered Valentino by 4 goals to 1, to claim the floating trophy, soccer kit and gold medals. In the under 17 category Simunye United humiliated the Mighty Blues 3-1, to receive a floating trophy, soccer kit and gold medals. The other winners were Kloof Mine Basketball team who pipped Bekkersdal Disability Forum 4-3 for the gold medals. Pool table (Snooker) star, Pule Mokokoe took top honours ahead of Tebogo Duma, winning the overall trophy.

Former Bafana stars, Godfrey Sapula and Hareaipha Marumo attended the ceremony to hand over the awards and also inspire the local soccer players. The Westonaria Local Municipality Councilor, Ms Cynthia Kwatshiwe expressed her gratitude to all who participated in the awareness raising games. She promised that government will make sure all sporting codes in Bekkersdal get access to facilities and the support they need to compete at the highest level.
