Urban Renewal: Bekkersdal Urban Renewal project is on track

The Gauteng Department of Housing has assured that the Bekkersdal Urban Renewal Project is on track.
This follows media reports to the contrary, which the department has described as "misleading, one-sided and completely out of context."
The Bekkersdal Urban Renewal Project, unlike other regeneration projects, said the department, was initiated in 2004. Its core objectives are to address the plight of Bekkersdal residents located on high-risk and dolomitic land through a relocation plan. [ Read more ] |

Bekkersdal Renewal Project on track

The Gauteng Department of Housing has noted with concern newspaper reports, based on the information generated by the Democratic Alliance (DA) about lack of progress in the Bekkersdal Urban Renewal Project. The department views the reports as misleading, one-sided and completely out of context.
The Bekkersdal Urban Renewal Project, unlike other regeneration projects, was initiated in 2004 and its core objectives are to address the plight of Bekkersdal residents located on high-risk and dolomatic land through a relocation plan. Those affected include communities residing on informal settlements, backyard shacks and hostel residents. [ Read more ]

Regeneration of Bekkersdal brings hope for residents

The R1.2 billion seven year reconstruction and development of Bekkersdal is set to bring a new sense of hope for the local community by tackling high unemployment in the area.
Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa officially launched the Bekkersdal Renewal Project in the Westonaria Municipality on Tuesday, saying it was a symbol of hope, not just for the people of Bekkersdal but for all South Africans.
Shilowa added that the project was also an expression of a people-centred government that cared about the problems of its people.
