Housing Projects

Based on the current settlement pattern in Bekkersdal, the town’s population can be divided into 3 groupings: the formal settlement of Bekkersdal Proper, the backyard shacks located on Bekkersdal Proper and the informal settlements of Bekkersdal. The intention of the Bekkersdal Renewal Project is to relocate the informal population of Bekkersdal.

Three types of residential uses are found in Bekkersdal Proper, namely formal single residential, which make up the majority of residential land uses, general residential uses, basically comprising a hostel complex, and informal settlements that have been formalised.

Relocation from Dolomitic Land

People and households have been moved from informal settlements on dangerous dolomitic land, especially along the sewage line, to transit camps. These are temporary homes, provided for the affected families, while the alternative housing areas are being developed. Residents had to be evacuated from certain areas in the informal part of Bekkersdal to make way for roads to be used by emergency vehicles, and for stormwater and other disaster management measures. The construction of new roads resulted in the relocation of approximately 350 shacks to the transit camp, which falls within the road reserve. This also entailed the development of the transit camp, with VIP latrines and stand taps. The transit camp is currently being extended.

Hostel Relocation

The original mine hostels are also situated on dangerous dolomitic land. The people living in the hostels will also be relocated to safe and sustainable alternative housing.
