Message from the Bekkersdal Development Forum

David Molebatsi, Chairman of the
Bekkersdal Development Forum

“Renewal programmes have many challenges. Chief among them is ensuring that the community has a voice and their interests are protected. The development process must be owned and controlled by the people, so that it is sustainable in the medium and long term,” said David Molebatsi, Chairman of the BDF. “The BDF has to also work closely with the other important stakeholders of the Bekkersdal Renewal Project, such as the Provincial Government, Department of Housing, Westonaria Local Government and the Powerhouse Consortium,” he added. Molebatsi encourages all organisations in Bekkersdal to participate in the BDF, especially in the General Council of the forum.

“As the BDF we realise that skills development is focused on the short term needs. We are trying to meet our immediate needs in the projects, like life skills, carpentry, brick-laying, paving, plastering and plumbing. But more importantly, we must also plan to address the skills shortages in the provincial economy, national and international economy. Constructions skills are in huge demand and computer skills are also needed, now and into the future,” said Molebatsi.
